The Big Slurp

"What are all these cows doing at South School?" Mrs Rodger asked.
We are celebrating 'The Big Slurp'. Lots of children slurped the milk that Fonterra provide for us every day. We know that milk is good for us - it makes our bones stronger, gives us vitamin B, and helps us grow taller than the teacher. (Mrs Rodger doesn't think you will grow taller than her. You will have to come back to visit her when you are adults so she can check).
We also love the taste of the milk.

Beeswax Candles

Yesterday Room 11made a beeswax candle. First we held the sheet of beeswax over the heater to soften it. After that we looped a piece of string for the wick. Then we rolled it over and over into a cylinder.
The classroom smelt like honey. Lots of children lit their candle when they got home.

Candle experiment

Today Rooms 10and 11 observed a science experiment showing that air has weight and takes up space. The question we were exploring was Does fire need oxygen? They were fascinated and had some excellent ideas about what was happening. We wrote it up, using a labelled diagram and a summary of what we discovered. I have included some pictures to show what it looked like if you want to try it at home.

The Great Kiwi Conundrum

What a great start today in our performance. Everything went smoothly and the children were very good at staying quiet and coming in on time. I know you will enjoy the show when you attend.

Visiting Parakeet

Mr Anderson brought one of his parakeets to school to show the class. The children really enjoyed learning about him. They have worked diligently on their bird feeders, stories and art work as part of the technology unit.

Bird Feeders

The children began to make the next bird feeder last Thursday. They have learnt about Tui's and planned what their feeder will look like. Mrs Clementson has done a great job on this technology unit.

Cross country

What a lovely afternoon last Friday for the cross country. We had great support from our school community and the Year 8 students. The children have been practising with varying degrees of intensity but all completed the run.
